An open letter to the community from the YMCA CEO, Paul Worstell


Dear Members, Community Supporters, and Friends of the YMCA,

As we look at 2018 in review, we have many reasons to celebrate. Recently, at our annual meeting, I shared some of our greatest wins and ambitious goals that serve our mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build strong spirit, mind, and body for all. I’d like to share these sentiments with you and my appreciation for those who helped us achieve that success.

First, I would like to personally express gratitude to our members, directors, and staff. I am humbled by your warm welcome, patience, and dedication during this transition. You are the reason for our success, and I am honored to continue to serve in this role.

Our staff continues to bring an exceptional level of commitment to excellence, and it shows through our member feedback. Daily, YMCA members support and encourage us, and we are grateful for their sentiments. Member satisfaction is a key metric in 2019 and we are looking forward to exceeding the expectations in the areas of opportunity our members have identified.

Our programming positively influences hundreds of underserved children, youth, and adults in our community. This part of our mission is critical, and we know that this level of service would be impossible without the steadfast support of our donors and volunteers. The annual campaign and special events like Men Who Cook, The Black Swamp Classic, and the 5K runs, are just a few of the events our community graciously supports. Last year, Tom Lause ran an incredible annual campaign and we thank him for his dedication and activation of the community. We will be incredibly judicious with the gifts provided by our donors.

We have been blessed with incredible support from our community partners including The City of Findlay, Findlay City Schools, The University of Findlay, Blanchard Valley Health System, Local Businesses, The Community Foundation, The United Way and so many more. These relationships have been nurtured in an environment of trust and collaboration, and we intend to build upon and grow these partnerships to serve the community in the most effective way possible.

Reviewing our successes from 2018 makes me proud of the work we do as a team. Our Child Development Center (CDC) has attained a quality level of 2 stars from the state licensing board and has an aggressive plan to achieve the top level by 2020. Our swimming and tennis faculty have coordinated efforts with our community partners to offer these services year-round. We have updated the locker room facilities and in 2019 we will implement an improvement plan for maintenance so that your Y is never completely out of service. And, at the end of 2018, we created a pilot initiative program where members can track, evaluate, and adjust their wellness regimen with the help of a wellness coach and health assessment data provided by Blanchard Valley Hospital. We have set the bar high with our accomplishments last year and look forward to sharing even more positive outcomes for 2019.

Finally, I would like to share a few thoughts on organizational culture.  As I get clarity around our own YMCA culture it seems to be defined in two words: Excellence and Kindness. Our staff has embraced these two key values as complimentary to one another, and it drives our internal growth. We are learning to trust each other in ways that will be transformational, and while we have much work to do, there is evidence of excellence and kindness all around us. We see it in the welcoming smiles of our front desk staff at each branch and the CDC, in the personal attention from our wellness coaches, in the commitment of our lifeguards, and in the dedicated spirit of our volunteer coaches. These and so many more team members positively impact the member experience every day. As a YMCA family, we are thriving in this culture of excellence and kindness and I am eager to see what we can achieve together.
